From the very first sentence in 25 year-old Zadie Smith's debut novel you'll be hooked. First meet average failure Archie Jones, whose New Year's resolution to gas himself is thwarted by an angry halal butcher demanding Archie move his car for the daily meat delivery. Archie believes that life now wants him and decides to start again, and so the novel draws us on to meet Archie's companions of eclectic characters, including a Bengali Muslim war veteran, an ego-laden middle-class geneticist and a rebellious Muslim son who has turned atheist and anglophile. Satirical but also compassionate and very funny, this is a refreshingly good book about life in a multicultural North London suburb towards the end of the 20th century, portraying life in all its messiness and tackling issues of identity, roots and race.
